AL.com Top 25: Bama, things are bad but history tells us itâs not over yet
Saturday night in Tuscaloosa reminded me of a night – just like last night – in Columbus, OH back in 2014. National title contender Ohio State fell to Virginia Tech by two scores and as fans headed to the exits early, you got the feeling that the Buckeyes playoff chances we’re circling the drain.
As you know, Ohio State went on to win the first-ever national championship of the College Football Playoff era. So, one loss doesn’t mean that CFP dreams are dashed. But much like 2014 Ohio State was at the same point this Alabama team is, things are quite bleak.
And they’re having to do it in the unfriendly confines of the SEC.
In the latest poll, you may also see some changes near the bottom of the rankings. There’s no G5 teams in the ranking following Tulane’s loss.
Also, and I am not the biggest fan of this but there’s some changes among the top five teams in the country. Texas and Florida State have been more impressive than Ohio State and Michigan. Yes, it is a small sample size, but you can make the case that two of the best three wins of the season so far belong to FSU and Texas.
How does the rest of the AL.com Top 25 look this week?
No. 25 Kansas (2-0): The Kansas Jayhawks have cool alternate uniforms and seem to be somewhat competent for the second season in a row. The Big 12 is going to but very fun if the Jayhawks can compete.
No. 24 Miami (2-0): It is early in the season, but Miami might be the second-best team in the ACC. Not saying much, when you look at the league.
No. 23 UCLA (2-0): A nice 2nd quarter explosion was the difference in the victory, paired with a few losses from previously ranked teams, the Bruins slide into the polls this week.
No. 22 Arkansas (2-0): A very workman-like effort vs. Kent State on Saturday.
No. 21 Ole Miss (2-0): Perhaps one of the more underrated victories of the weekend, a solid road win at Tulane.
No. 20 Iowa (2-0): Cade McNamara and a solid defense could make the Big Ten’s West division a runaway by early November.
No. 19. North Carolina (2-0): Maybe UNC should just stop playing Appalachian State, it doesn’t seem too much fun to play them.
No. 18 Oregon State (2-0): We will know a lot more about the Beavers over the next few weeks with games against San Diego State, Utah, and Washington State.
No. 17 Oklahoma (2-0): I won’t declare that OU is back, but it for sure feels like last season is last season.
No. 16 Kansas State (2-0): If Kansas State gets past Missouri, then UCF, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech are waiting for them.
No. 15 Colorado (2-0): Friends, the Buffaloes are for real and worthy of a top 15 ranking. And it’s personal, just ask Nebraska.
No. 14 Oregon (2-0): After surviving a wild night in Lubbock, all roads lead to Sept. 23 when they host Colorado.
No. 13 Utah (2-0): One more non-conference game then the brutal Pac-12 slate begins.
No. 12 LSU (1-1): LSU bounces back from the season-opening loss to Florida State, but they’ve got Ole Miss and Arkansas over the next three weeks.
No. 11 Notre Dame (3-0): Is Notre Dame good? I lean yes, but ‘CFP contender’ good? Ask me after Ohio State on Sept. 23.
No. 10 Alabama (1-1): This was a nightmare of a reality check, how does Alabama bounce back?
No. 9 Washington (2-0): The Huskies took care of business, now facing an embattled Michigan State squad next weekend.
No. 8 Tennessee (2-0): Super fascinated to see how Tennessee plays Florida on the road at The Swamp this weekend.
No. 7 Penn State (2-0): This coming weekend, Penn State faces an Illinois team that is desperate for a win.
No. 6 Ohio State (2-0): I think Ohio State is good, I just want them to actually show it against a good team.
No. 5 USC (3-0): Good teams should go out and beat the bad teams, and that’s exactly what USC did to Stanford on Saturday.
No. 4 Texas (2-0): Texas isn’t ‘Back’ yet, but that was perhaps the most complete and impressive road victory since winning at Ohio State in 2005.
No. 3 Florida State (2-0): Look, Florida State being good again is great for college football and hell for the rest of the ACC.
No. 2 Michigan: (2-0): Harbaugh comes back in two weeks; Michigan will still be undefeated and unchallenged.
No. 1 Georgia (2-0): Speaking of undefeated and unchallenged, Georgia is still No. 1.
